January 12: Catherine Black, Claudia Dey and Melanie Janisse

Welcome back to work! How’s the hangover? We’ve got the cure for the post-holiday blues — amazing writing (and maybe a hair of that pesky dog). Come kick January in the face with us on January 12 when Catherine Black, Claudia Dey and Melanie Janisse grace the stage at Pivot.

Catherine Black has wandered her way back to Toronto where she was born and raised and now lives with her husband and son. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of writing at OCAD University. Black is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s M.F.A. writing program, and her poetry and fiction has appeared in various Canadian and American literary journals including The Fiddlehead, The Harpweaver, Scrivener Creative Review, Rhino, Preling and Palimpsest. Her first book of prose poetry, Lessons of Chaos and Disaster, was published as part of Guernica Editions’ First Poet Series in 2007. Her experimental memoir A Hard Gold Thread is forthcoming with Guernica Editions in fall 2011.

Claudia Dey is a novelist, playwright and columnist. She writes the weekly Coupling column for The Globe and Mail. She also wrote The Globe and Mail’s Group Therapy column and Toro magazine’s sex column under the pseudonym, Bebe O’Shea. Her plays have been produced internationally and include Beaver, Trout Stanley and The Gwendolyn Poems, which was nominated for the Governor General’s Award and the Trillium Award. Her debut novel, Stunt, was chosen by The Globe and Mail and Quill & Quire as Book of the Year and was shortlisted for the Amazon.ca First Novel Award. Her non-fiction follow-up, How to Be a Bush Pilot: A Field Guide to Getting Luckier is published by HarperCollins. Dey lives in Toronto.

Melanie Janisse‘s first collection of poetry is Orioles in the Oranges (Guernica, 2009). She holds degrees Communications from Concordia University and Visual Arts from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Now a resident of Toronto, Melanie keeps active as a visual artist, poet, designer and shop owner.
